Help That Matters: How Public Assistance Gave Naomi a Second Chance

"Without public assistance I don't know where I would be, but I know I certainly would not be where I am now. I have a full-time job, a home I was able to purchase in 2018, a car that is old but paid off. My child who had complications, medical and mental health issues, is a bright straight A student who wants to be a teacher when she grows up. The programs offered helped me at a time I needed it most." - Naomi

Story shared with permission from client.

At just 21 years old, Naomi faced a reality that many young parents fear—a future filled with uncertainty, financial strain, and difficult choices. With no stable housing and little income, the prospect of raising a child seemed overwhelming. But through resilience and the critical support of programs like Medicaid and WIC, Naomi found the strength to push forward. Her journey is not just one of survival, but of transformation—proof that with the right resources, people can overcome obstacles and build a stable, hopeful future for themselves and their children. This is Naomi's* story—a testament to the impact of public assistance in turning hardship into opportunity.

When Naomi* found out she was pregnant, she was only 21 and living with friends. She didn't have a stable home or much money, and she worried about how she would take care of her baby. Thankfully, she was able to get help—food assistance and medical assistance—so that she could stay healthy during her pregnancy.

After her baby was born, things got even harder. Naomi had serious health complications, and the medical bills piled up fast. Without Medicaid, she would have faced hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt—an amount she could never afford. Medicaid covered her care and gave her a chance to heal without worrying about crushing bills.

Her baby had digestive issues and needed a special formula that cost $28 per can. One can only lasted two days, which meant she would have spent $420 each month—money she didn't have. Thankfully, WIC provided formula, making sure her baby got the nutrition they needed.

During this time, Naomi was trapped in an unsafe home situation. But because she qualified for income-based housing, she was finally able to leave domestic violence behind and create a safe place for her child.

Over the years, her child stayed on Medicaid, which helped cover medical care when Naomi's job didn't provide enough insurance—especially for mental health. When her employer shut down, Medicaid stepped in again, covering inpatient mental health care.

Even now, years later, Medicaid plays an important role in their lives. Naomi now has a job helping others in a similar situation. Even with that employment, paying for private insurance for her child would be too expensive. Thanks to Medicaid, she can keep her child covered while working close to home and serving her community.
