From Hardship to Healing: The Power of Medical Assistance

Life is unpredictable. One moment, a person may feel invincible, and the next, they may find themselves in a situation where medical care is their only hope. Whether it's the sudden onset of illness, a devastating accident, or a chronic condition that requires careful management, access to medical assistance can mean the difference between recovery and hardship. In times of crisis, skilled healthcare professionals provide more than just treatment—they offer reassurance, guidance, and the expertise necessary to navigate life's most challenging moments.

This is Richard's story:

Richard* was having significant health issues that impacted his ability to work his physically demanding job and progressed to the point where just doing daily tasks became difficult. Richard went to his doctor, and they determined he needed surgery to manage his condition. Richard did not have health insurance and upon consulting with the financial department of his health care provider, Richard was told to schedule the surgery he would need to provide $30,000 of the cost up front. Richard did not have those funds available, so he reached our office to find out if there were any options for health care coverage. Our agency staff guided him through the application process to apply for medical assistance (Medicaid) and due to his reduced income, he was eligible.

On the day Richard was approved for medical assistance he suffered a medical emergency and was taken to the Emergency Room for care. Shortly thereafter he was taken into surgery. Both medical events were covered by his medical assistance. His medical assistance covered the cost of his ER visit, surgery and subsequent medical care.

"Anyone can develop health issues and find themselves in a position where they cannot work and cannot afford their health care. It can be hard for me to ask for help, especially when I worked hard to take care of myself for my entire adult life. But I'm so thankful for programs like medical assistance to provide a safety net when I needed it. Because I got the care I needed, I am healing and plan to return to my full-time job soon. "           – Richard

About one out of every three people in Faribault County (4,600 people) and about one out of every four people in Martin County (5,200 people) get help paying for their healthcare through Medical Assistance. Richard's story shows why this program is so important. Medical Assistance helps people and families get the medical care they need when they don't have enough money to pay for it. It gives them a chance to get better, stay healthy, and become independent again.
