Mental Health Month: Upward Bound Drop-In Center Creates a Supportive Community

Everyone deserves somewhere they can feel safe and be themselves. The Clubhouse has been providing that space for individuals in our community since 1997. Since its beginning, the Clubhouse has served over 300 members! Currently, there are 93 members. While most Clubhouse members struggle with severe and persistent mental illnesses, everyone is welcome!

Members get a calendar each month of the activities happening, and the day trips that are planned. Every week there are activities going on such as painting, movie nights, bingo, a walking group, and more. Day trips include pontoon rides, sporting events, going to an apple orchard in the fall, and more. There is a large variety of activities offered, and some members have shared that their favorite activity is a day trip to Mankato to go thrifting! Every day, members have access to TVs, local newspapers, computers with internet and Wi-Fi, sewing machines, and arts and crafts supplies.

"There is no judgment or mental health stigma here and members find comfort in visiting with other members who are enduring similar challenges."

Darek Olson, Drop-In Center Coordinator

Members shared that they are thankful for the Clubhouse for so many reasons. They enjoy having a space to socialize, and somewhere where it is okay if they have a bad day. Members also love that they can be involved on the board where they help make important decisions for the Clubhouse.

With 2 options to choose from, members don't have to worry about how they are going to get to the Clubhouse. Members can be picked up from their homes or can be provided with free tokens to ride the Prairie Lakes bus. The Clubhouse owns a large multi-passenger van and provides transportation access to events.

The Clubhouse provides support and a comfortable safe space for members to visit with others who have similar experiences to them, where they can socialize and build friendships and spend less time isolated at home. The goal is to provide an atmosphere of acceptance, understanding, and belonging. Most importantly, there is no cost to become a member.
