What is Mental Illness? What are the signs and symptoms?

º Drastic changes in behavior and emotions.
º Sudden change in grades at school or productivity at work.
º Inability to concentrate at school or at work.
º Seeming to have withdrawn, is confused and/or isolated.
º Inability to function in daily life related to self care, money management, meal preparation, housekeeping or personal hygiene.
º Lost interest or pleasure in self care, activities/hobbies or sex.
º Engaging in self destructive behaviors, including alcohol/drug abuse or self abuse.
º Socially disruptive behaviors.
º Difficulty in dealing effectively with stressful situations.
º Bizarre thought disorder; seeing/hearing things that are not there, believing things that are not real.

What services do we provide?

ADULT MENTAL HEALTH

I. CASE MANAGEMENT
involves assessment, planning, implementation and coordination of services with adults who experience serious and persistent mental illness.
II. COMMUNITY SUPPORT PROGRAM:
º crisis assistance
offers protection and support to an adult with serious and persistent mental illness in crisis.
º client outreach
offers community support where the individual lives and provides face to face contact in a non-intrusive manner.
º assistance with independent living skills
provides training of independent living skills so maximum independence may be achieved and maintained.
º psychosocial rehabilitation
provides training in coping mechanisms so the individual becomes socially integrated into the community. Involves the individual in psychosocial and educational activities through the use of the consumer resource center "Upward Bound 5th Street Express."
III. DAY TREATMENT
is a structured program of therapeutic and rehabilitative services delivered in a group setting. Attendance can range from at least once a week for a three hour time block to a maximum of three times a week. The Day Treatment settings are both single sex groups and mixed groups.

CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH

Children's Mental Health Case Management
Management assists and supports children with severe emotional disturbance and their families. Community support services are coordinated and advocacy for needed mental health, educational, legal and other social services is also provided.
In-Home Family Counseling
is a service designed to strengthen the family system. The goal is to assist the family and children diagnosed with severe emotional disturbances to reside together in a safe and nurturing home setting. The services will emphasize family strengths and provide information and support to both children and parents. The family, with the assistance of the counselor, will set goals to improve family and/or child functioning. The counselor will utilize developmental asset materials as well as activities to improve family communication and reduce family stress.
Family Community Support Services
are available to children and families of children diagnosed with severe emotional disturbances. This service strives to help children develop independent living skills and participate in leisure and recreational activities. It can help parents develop new and better parenting skills, explore financial resources, and provide support to families of children with severe emotional problems.
Local Coordinating Council
is a monthly group meeting involving families, youth, law enforcement, school staff, corrections staff and human services staff to assist families and youth in addressing concerns and celebrate successes at school, in the community and at home.
Children's Day Treatment
is a structured program of therapeutic and rehabilitative services delivered in a group setting within the school. Day treatment services for children are an integrated set of education, therapy, and family interventions.

Upward Bound (consumer center) is a non-profit community service offering a support group for people who struggle with stress, anxiety, depression or other nervous or emotional problems.
Community Based Initiative (CBI)
A state/county program of coordinated services to help the individual maintain and/or reintegrate to life in the community. The program also provides crisis management.
Client Assistance Program
A program available to qualified individuals/families to work on their issues with qualified psychotherapists.
Adult Employability Project
An inter-agency program to assist adults who experience serious and persistent mental illness to seek and retain competitive employment.
